2023 VA Summer Residential Governor’s School Process

Interest Meeting: Tuesday, November 1 at 3:00 p.m. in Warhawk Hall

The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) offers the opportunity for 10th and 11th grade students to apply to attend summer residential Governor’s schools in Academics and Visual and Performing Arts (VPA). Students who are accepted into one of the programs will live in residence halls in one of the state colleges in VA for four weeks in the June - late July timeframe. To be considered for an academic or VPA Governor’s school, students must complete the steps below:

Step 1: Attend our school’s interest meeting which will take place on Tuesday, November 1 after school from 3:00 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. in Warhawk Hall. This meeting is for students only. Attendance at the meeting is optional but strongly encouraged

(Note: This meeting will not discuss the Governor’s World Languages Academy programs. Students interested in these programs should speak directly with their world languages teacher.)

Step 2: Complete the interest form linked below for either Academics or VPA. The form is a required part of the application process and is due Thursday, November 10. No late entries will be accepted. When completing the form, enter a personal email address and NOT an fcpsschools.net email address. VDOE cannot send communications to the fcpsschools.net domain.

Step 3: Complete and submit the pre-application for the specific program for which you wish to apply and submit by Thursday, November 10.  

A pre-application includes:

  • Academic Programs
    • Application Cover page with Applicant and High School Information
    • Career Highlights: Activities, Research & Honors page
    • Applicant & Parent/Guardian Assurances page
    • Teacher Signature page (identifies 2 teachers that agree to write a letter of recommendation on the student’s behalf, if they move forward in the application process)
  • VPA
    • Application Cover page with Applicant and High School Information
    • Training/Experience/Honors & Awards page
    • Applicant & Parent/Guardian Assurances page
    • Teacher Signature page (identifies 2 teachers that agree to write a letter of recommendation on the student’s behalf, if they move forward in the application process)

Details on this pre-application will be shared during the interest meeting on Tuesday, November 1. Resources and directions (including a checklist) will also be posted in Schoology, in the Student Services course in the ‘2023 Governor’s School’ folder, after the meeting has taken place.
