What to do if your Student Tests Positive for COVID

Student Tests Positive

  • Student must stay home.
  • Parents should notify the school using the attendance online form or by calling 703-319-2319.
  • Student must complete a 10-day isolation period from school and school-related activities, including sports.
  • The 10-day count begins from the onset of symptoms if symptomatic and from the positive test date if asymptomatic with that date being day zero.
  • The enrolling parent will be notified by a Madison High School Administrator for additional guidance.

Additional Information for Students who Test Positive

Return to School Process

Student may return to school when all of the following criteria is met:

  • Student completes at least 10 days of isolation from symptom onset for symptomatic students or 10 days from positive test for asymptomatic students; AND
  • Student is fever free for 24 hours without fever-reducing medication; AND
  • The student’s symptoms have improved; AND
  • Student submits the FCPS Isolation Email Letter (sent from Ms. Taylor or Ms. Calvert) with the return date to the Attendance Office upon return to school.

Livestream / Recording of Direct Instruction

  • Teachers, students and parents will be notified by email when a student will need to access livestreaming or recordings of direct instruction. 
  • Teachers will check in with students via email every other day.
  • Teachers will livestream classes on Zoom or provide a recording of direct instruction through Schoology.  Note:  This is NOT concurrent or hybrid learning.  During the livestream, the remote student’s camera and audio will be off, but they will be able to watch and listen.

Reporting Attendance

  • Once a parent has received, from a Madison administrator, their Return to School email, the student will be marked as Medical (excused) until their return date.
  • Parents do not need to report attendance daily during a student’s isolation period.

If the Student has Siblings at Madison

Participation in Extracurricular Activities and Athletics

  • The student will not be able to participate in any in-person activities or athletics until they have been cleared to return to school.
  • If the student is an athlete, John Kenny, Director of Student Activities, will notify the coach that the athlete is on pause and of the athlete’s return date.

 

What to do if your Student is a Close Contact of a Positive Case at Madison High School

Student is identified as a close contact to a case at Madison High School

  • Parents will be notified through email with a Pause Letter from Assistant Principal, Liz Calvert.  Please check your emails regularly.
  • Students must stay home until they are cleared to return.  
  • Students who are paused but come to school will be sent home through the clinic. 
  • If your child is fully vaccinated and asymptomatic:
    • Parents should complete the FCHD vaccination survey linked in the Pause Letter.
    • Students may resume in-person learning and activities ONLY when they receive a clearance email from the Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD).
    • Students should access learning materials in each course through their Schoology Course - Paused Folder. 
  • If your child is not fully vaccinated and asymptomatic:
    • Student must complete a 5-day quarantine; AND
    • Student must remain asymptomatic; AND
    • Student must wear a face mask for Days 6-10; AND
    • Student must submit the FCPS Pause Email Letter to the Attendance Office upon return to school.
    • Students should access learning materials in each course through their Schoology Course - Paused Folder.

What to do if  your Student is a Close Contact to a Case OUTSIDE of Madison High School

  • NEW!  FCPS will no longer require Return to School documentation for a student deemed a close contact outside of the school environment, in the community. FCPS recommends that families adhere to the Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD) quarantine guidance, as appropriate. If families have questions regarding COVID-19, they are encouraged to consult their physician or the Fairfax County Health Department.
